Tese de mestrado, Engenharia Informática , 2022, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de CiênciasWith the increase in the amount of vehicles and the population in big cities, problems related to traffic jams, traffic congestion and pollution arise with it. A lot of investigation has been done to try and solve or, at least, mitigate this problem. Governments are trying to mitigate traffic congestion and traffic jams by better understanding traffic, its characteristics and its patterns and getting insights about traffic. The purpose of this research is to create general traffic indicators for the city of Lisbon and, to do so, we will apply state of the art methods to a dataset of traffic from the city of Lisbon, provided by Camara Municipal de Lisboa ˆ that contain traffic data from the years of 2019 and 2020. We discuss the several types of data used in this type of problem, the pre-processing techniques used to transform the data, the several state of the art methods used for both prediction of traffic flow, and classification of different traffic situations, and also the performance metrics used to evaluate results. We make an exploratory and a more complex analysis to the provided data and also a discussion about the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on the data and the problems that this could bring. We explain all the pre-processing and data cleaning techniques we used to handle the data, all the prediction models used, as in LSTM and ARIMA, and all the classification models used, as in Decision Tree Classifier and SVM. For the prediction task, LSTM obtained a mean RMSE of 10.493, while ARIMA got a mean RMSE of 38.722. For the classification task, DTC got a mean accuracy of 96.7%, while SVM got a mean accuracy of 88.6%

This dissertation tackles issues of performance practice, focusing on music genre diversity in Portuguese composers born between 1960 and 1970. This generation’s postmodern technical and artistic eclecticism is therefore addressed from a performer point of view. The crux of the present text comprises chamber music with piano of contemporary composers with a background in western art music. The resulting analytical examples consider mainly the perspective of the pianist within the ensemble. One piece from each of the following three composers is thoroughly addressed: Eurico Carrapatoso, Carlos Marecos, and João Madureira. The goal of the ensuing analysis was to establish a link between theory and practice for an agreeable performance. Considering metaphors as constant in the creative process, it was also addressed its use as a tool for performers. Some issues on context and meaning of each composition are also tackled

This paper uses novel tools from the statistical learning literature to the exercise of forecasting the exchange rate of the five currencies of the BRICS countries. Combining these tools with Taylor Rule, purchase power parity, uncover interest rate parity, and monetary models for short and long horizons, the results confirm the improved efficiency over the classical linear regression method. However, the performance varied between methods for different currencies. Also, rolling and expanding window schemes were employed, with no winner.

NEXX Helmets : keeping up with international demand

This master thesis is divided into three main parts: case-study, literature review and teaching notes. With the aim of provide a real business case to be used for class discussion in a strategic/internationalization based courses, where students can apply strategic frameworks and their knowledge. NEXX was founded in 2001; the period until 2014 was of constant growth, with increasing sales, employees and factory space. In order to leverage some strength diversification and differentiation strategies were applied. The growth has been constrained by different factors: physical limit of production or lack of funding and bank support. The use of contract manufacturing, and factory expansion were adopted to handle production. The main guidelines for the brand have been: differentiation and searching for other markets. By the end of 2014 NEXX was present in more than fifty countries. The initial intent was to fulfill a gap in the international market with a clear vision of quality, well designed, and well-priced helmets. When this goal was achieved, more than just being among the best, the company wanted to be among the five industry leaders before the year 2020. How growth should be managed and strategy should be suited to achieve the desired position are some of the most significant challenges. The second part of this master thesis – literature review – contains the most relevant theory to interpret and analyze the case-study, answering the assigned question present on the last section. This last content – teaching notes – aims to provide guidance but also possible solutions for the questions

Development of a microfluidics droplet generator

The need for mass scale testing in areas such as microbiology and chemistry requires faster processing times, multiplexing capability, and reduced reagent requirements. To achieve this, the volumes processed must be reduced. This work intends to produce a microfluidic chip capable of producing increasingly smaller droplets that serve as testing vessels, by taking advantage of the dynamics of two immiscible fluids. The purpose of the present chip is to be used in the future in a digital Polymerised Chain Reaction (dPCR) for DNA amplification and detection. The microfluidic device was first simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics to understand the different behaviours of the droplet generator junctions. Glass sealed devices were produced using soft-lithography, composed of two different parts, a glass substrate and a top PDMS slab fabricated by photolithography of a SU-8 mould on a Si wafer that was used to mould the PDMS. Devices were tested with two immiscible fluids, which were injected at a constant flow rate into two inlets that lead to the junction were the droplets were formed. We were able to obtain droplets as small as 1 nL in devices with a channel size of 50 μm. We concluded that reducing the entry section to the main channel until the junction point, will decrease droplet size keeping the same size of the channels after the junction. Faster droplet generation rate was also obtained, using side channels width smaller (50 μm) than the main channel (100 μm)

Internet gambling: : A critical review of behavioural tracking research

This paper reviews and analyzes studies that are focused on Internet gambling with the use of behavioural tracking and big data to identify gambling behaviour. The behaviour of gamblers has been extensively studied and much has been published on the subject. The vast majority of research has relied on self-reported gambling behaviour or case study research. With the advent of the Internet, however, it has become possible for researchers to remotely study the real behaviour of gamblers. The goal has been to empirically describe playing behaviour in several conditions and contexts. Existing research, conducted since the 2000s, focuses on several forms of gambling such as sports betting, casino, poker, and lottery, but there is still only a concise body of research on gambling behaviour with the use of Internet gambling tracking data. Most studies are based on the same databases, meaning that a few companies and websites were the basis for most of the research produced so far. It is important to explore new sources of information, methodologies, and approaches to enrich discussion and contribute to a better understanding of this field. The empirical analysis of gambling behaviour with the use of tracking data was found to greatly contribute to the understanding of player behaviour, despite existing limitations and problems. Considering that Internet gambling behavioural tracking is still a fairly recent phenomenon, much can still be done to further develop this field of research.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
